Indiana Vehicle Registration Fees — 2026

Indiana uses an age-depreciation formula. $21.35 base fee; 2.0% of value (Excise tax); age-depreciation table; +$221 EV surcharge. Use the calculator below for your specific vehicle.

Indiana builds its registration cost from two pieces: an excise tax tied to the vehicle's MSRP class plus a set of flat fees, all updated for 2026. What you actually pay depends on the car's value, weight, age, and fuel type, and the calculator above breaks out each line. Two things make Indiana stand out next to its neighbors: county-level add-ons that stack on the state total, and a $221.30 EV surcharge that pushes electric ownership noticeably higher. Who needs to register a vehicle in Indiana

You must register a vehicle in Indiana if any of these apply: you're a new resident (the Indiana grace period is 60 days from establishing residency); you bought a vehicle from an Indiana dealer or private seller; you're returning to Indiana after a military or out-of-state assignment ended; or you inherited or were gifted a vehicle now garaged in-state. Active-duty military stationed in Indiana but domiciled elsewhere may keep their home-state registration under the SCRA. See moving and car registration for re-registration timing.

Required documents

Indiana typically requires: the vehicle title (or Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin for a brand-new vehicle); proof of Indiana liability insurance meeting the state minimum of 25/50/25; a valid driver's license or state ID; a current emissions or inspection certificate (biennial test required in Lake and Porter counties only); a VIN inspection for any vehicle previously titled out of state; an odometer disclosure (federally required under 10 years); and a bill of sale or signed title transfer. If a lender holds a lien, see registering a car with a lien. A vehicle bill of sale is recommended for private purchases.

How to register a vehicle in Indiana: step-by-step

  1. Gather the documents above and confirm the title signature is notarized if Indiana requires it.
  2. Visit your nearest BMV branch, or check the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) portal at in.gov/bmv for online and appointment options.
  3. If the vehicle was purchased out of state, expect a VIN verification on site.
  4. Pay the fees — see the Indiana breakdown table below.
  5. Receive your registration card and plate(s). Most Indiana renewals afterward can be completed online or by mail.

How the excise tax actually works

The excise tax is where most of an Indiana registration bill comes from, and it isn't a flat percentage of what you paid. The Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) sorts each vehicle into a value class based on the manufacturer's original retail price (its MSRP when new), then applies an age factor that drops every year. The age of the vehicle is figured by subtracting the model year from the registration year, so a 2026 model registered in 2026 sits at age 1 and carries the full assessed value.

Our calculator mirrors that age-depreciation curve. Here is the factor applied to a vehicle's MSRP class at each age:

Vehicle ageValue factorWhat it means
1 year100%full assessed value
2 years90%
3 years81%
4 years73%
5 years66%
6–8 years50%holds steady for three years
9+ years30%floor for older vehicles

The 2.0% rate in the fee table is applied to that depreciated value, not the original sticker. So the same car costs less in excise tax every renewal until it levels off at the 30% floor in its ninth year. A high-MSRP truck and an economy sedan of the same age land in different value classes, which is why two neighbors with identically aged cars can owe very different amounts. Indiana publishes the class breakpoints on its excise tax information page.

Renewal & late penalty

Renewal cycle: annual, with a two-year option available on many passenger vehicles. Your renewal date stays the same year after year and never shifts; the BMV assigns expiration based on the registrant's last name, and the exact date is printed on your registration card.

Late penalty: $15–$30 based on lateness. A flat $15 administrative penalty is assessed on each registration accepted after its expiration date, and a separate $30 administrative penalty applies to a title application filed past the 60-day new-resident window.

Indiana starts the late-penalty clock on the expiration date printed on your registration card, not on any renewal-notice date. If your base fee is $21.35 and you miss the deadline, the penalty above is added on top of normal fees. See late registration penalties.

How to renew online

Most Indiana drivers never set foot in a branch to renew. The fastest route is a free myBMV account at mybmv.bmv.in.gov, where the system pulls up your vehicle and shows the amount due. Have your VIN, driver's license number, date of birth, and address ready; first-time online users may also be asked for the last four of a Social Security number to verify identity. You can pay by card and either print a temporary receipt or wait for the sticker to arrive by mail. Indiana also accepts renewals by phone at 888-692-6841, at any self-service BMV Connect kiosk, by mail using the checklist the BMV provides, or in person at a branch. Renewing online or at a kiosk is usually the quickest path and avoids the wait at a counter.

Common scenarios

Used car from a dealer: The dealer normally handles title application, collects sales tax, and submits paperwork to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). You provide insurance and ID at delivery.

Used car from a private seller: Indiana charges 7% state sales tax on private vehicle sales. The buyer transfers the title within the Indiana grace period. See sales tax on a used car from a private sale.

Leased vehicle: Title is held by the leasing company; registration fees and any EV surcharges still apply normally.

Gifted vehicle: Transfers between immediate family members are exempt from sales tax with affidavit. See gifted car registration and title transfer between family members.

Inherited vehicle: Bring the prior owner's title, death certificate, and any probate paperwork to the BMV branch; direct heirs are typically exempt from sales tax.

Bought out of state: Title it in Indiana on return; you may receive credit for tax already paid elsewhere. See out-of-state vehicle registration.

EV, hybrid & alt-fuel surcharges

Indiana charges a $221.30 annual surcharge on battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and $74.50 on plug-in hybrids. The surcharge is added on top of all other registration components. See EV registration fees by state for the full 2026 comparison.

New-resident timeline & deadline

Move to Indiana and the clock starts the day you establish residency. You have 60 days to apply for an Indiana certificate of title on every vehicle you own and brought with you. Miss that window and the BMV adds a $30 administrative penalty per vehicle on top of the normal title fee. New residents bring the out-of-state title, proof of Indiana insurance, and a driver's license or state ID, and any vehicle previously titled in another state goes through a VIN verification before the title is issued. Plan to handle the title and registration in the same visit so you leave with valid plates rather than driving on expired out-of-state tags.

Emissions & inspection requirements

Indiana does not run a statewide emissions program. Testing is limited to Lake and Porter counties in the northwest corner of the state. Vehicles registered there that were built after 1975 and rated at 9,000 pounds gross vehicle weight or less must pass a test every two years. The schedule follows the model year: vehicles from odd-numbered years are tested in odd years, even-numbered years in even years. The four most recent model years are exempt, as are antique vehicles. Everywhere else in Indiana, there is no emissions or safety inspection tied to registration, though any vehicle coming in from another state still needs a VIN inspection the first time it's titled here.

County & local variations

Indiana counties add a local wheel/surtax that varies. The calculator uses a $25 median; check your county's actual amount on the BMV website. Marion County (Indianapolis) and the surrounding suburban counties typically run higher, while rural counties may charge little or nothing. Because the surtax is set locally, the same vehicle can cost more to register a county over, so confirm your county's rate before assuming the median figure.

Common mistakes to avoid

Federal tax deductibility

On Schedule A, you can deduct the value-based portion of Indiana registration (Excise tax). Other components are not deductible. Report the deductible portion on IRS Schedule A line 5c (Personal Property Taxes), subject to the $10,000 SALT cap and only if you itemize. See our guide on the car registration fee tax deduction.
