How states calculate late penalties
Late registration penalties vary dramatically. California is harshest — up to 80% of the Vehicle License Fee plus the base fee for vehicles more than one year late. Texas charges 20% of the base fee after 5 days. Pennsylvania charges $0 for standard passenger vehicles. Some states tier penalties by days late; others charge flat fees.
This calculator uses each state's published penalty schedule from 2026 DMV materials. Actual penalties may vary slightly based on local fees, vehicle weight, EV surcharge, and county add-ons. For a full registration cost estimate, use the main calculator.
