How Texas vehicle registration fees are calculated

Texas DMV uses a flat weight-tier registration fee schedule. Unlike California (value-based) or Massachusetts (excise), Texas charges every passenger car the same base fee regardless of MSRP. Registrations are annual. Base fee under Texas Transportation Code §502.253:

Vehicle classAnnual base fee
Passenger car / light truck (≤ 6,000 lbs)$50.75
Truck / SUV 6,001-10,000 lbs$54.00
Heavy vehicle > 10,000 lbs$110.00 (varies higher by weight)

On top of base, every Texas registration includes statewide add-ons: $7.50 inspection program replacement fee (replaces the old vehicle safety inspection, effective Jan 1 2025 under HB 3297) and $1 TexasSure verification fee. Plus a county road and bridge fee of $0-$21.50, set by each county (most are $11.50; Travis County is highest at $21.50; a handful of rural counties skip it entirely).

Electric vehicles pay an additional $200 EV surcharge per Texas SB 505, effective Sept 2023. Hybrids pay nothing extra. One-time fees on new registrations: $33 title fee, $7.50 plate fee, and if you're new to Texas a $90 new-resident impact fee (replaces sales tax — much cheaper than paying 6.25% TX sales tax on the vehicle's value).

For the full Texas registration mechanics including the 30-day new-resident timeline, vehicle inspection rule changes after HB 3297, and county-specific add-ons, see our Texas state page. For cross-state comparisons, see cheapest states to register a car and EV registration fees by state.

Texas is consistently in the cheapest 5 states for vehicle registration. A $30,000 sedan in Texas typically costs $70-$92/year in total registration fees. The same vehicle in California would cost $410-$460/year and in New York would cost $80-$110 every 2 years plus $100 MCTD if in NYC metro. Texas's flat-fee structure means a $90,000 truck pays the same base as a $20,000 sedan — value plays no role.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to register a car in Texas?

For a typical passenger car under 6,000 lbs, expect $80-$92/year: $50.75 base + $7.50 inspection program replacement + $1 TexasSure verification + $11.50-$21.50 county road and bridge fee. EVs add $200 per SB 505.

What is the Texas new-resident impact fee?

If you're new to Texas and bringing a vehicle from another state, you pay a one-time $90 new-resident impact fee instead of the 6.25% Texas sales tax on the vehicle's value. For most vehicles this saves significant money.

Does Texas have an annual vehicle inspection?

No — Texas eliminated the annual safety inspection program effective Jan 1, 2025 (HB 3297). Drivers now pay a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee instead. Emissions inspections still apply in certain counties (Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, El Paso).

How much is the Texas EV registration fee?

Electric vehicles registered in Texas pay an additional $200 annual surcharge (Texas SB 505, effective Sept 2023). Hybrids and plug-in hybrids currently pay nothing extra in Texas.

What are county road and bridge fees in Texas?

Counties may charge $0-$21.50 in additional road and bridge fees. Most counties charge $11.50. Travis County (Austin) charges the maximum $21.50. A few rural counties charge nothing. The fee funds local road maintenance.
